Adapter Stats 1.5
by Ken Knight

Important: Some people have reported this not working on their Win98/SE systems.  This is caused to an improper IPhlpAPI.dll file being loaded on the system.  Microsoft has documented a bug in their knowledgebase about this.  If you are running Win98 First or Second Edition and experience this problem there are several steps you can take;  Update to the latest version of Internet explorer or make a backup copy of your current IPhlpAPI.dll located in the Windows\system directory and then replace it with this one - IPhlpAPI.dll ver 5.00.1717.2

If I've heard or seen this question once, I've seen it a hundred times in different forums and client sites.  "How do I make the adapter icon show up in the icon tray?" and then that all too familiar phrase of "you can't... it's only in Win2k.".

Today marks the end of the "it's only in Win2k" era.  What I've done is written something very similar to that product.  There are some differences which I'll explain:

  • Adapter Stats monitors all tcp and udp going through the system, not just a single adapter.

  • Because of the timer resolution, it will probably not match up exactly against a Win2k version if you compare the blinking icons.

  • Also because of the API calls I'm making and the calculations done the number of packets will probably be greater than what the one in Win2k reports, again because I'm monitoring *All TCP/UDP* not just one adapter.

Here is a screen shot of the main screen;

Looks very similar, doesn't it.  And here is "Adapter Stats" in the icon tray.

New in version 1.5 is the "winipcfg" look-a-like screen that allows you to get valuable information on your adapters, such as the mac address, the currently assigned IP address and much more.  Below is a screen shot.

So what we've got here is a utility that provides tools that are missing from Win98 and Win2k.

Win98 - does not have the adapter status tray icon
Win2k - does not winipcfg.  I'm aware that it has ipconfig, but this is not GUI like winipcfg.

There is a bug in Win2k with the release IP API, however, once I get that one worked out, then this will also allow you to release and renew ip addresses on adapters.
