A guide to using a router with your 180

WARNING!!!    THIS MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY!!!

The Starband Model 180 will be referred to as the "IDU" in these instructions.
(IN DOOR UNIT)

I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A DRAFT.  I'm human and make mistakes.  If changes are made to this page, I will make it obvious.  Please email me if you find any errors or if you find a way to optimize these settings.

STEP 1.  Install (or have installed) your Starband System to ensure that it is working properly.

STEP 2.  Purchase a Router.  I prefer the Linksys BFSR41 Cable/DSL Router.  It has 4 10/100 Switched ports plus the WAN port.  The WAN port is where the IDU will connect.  The 10/100 ports is where your computers will connect.

This one if you own a 100 MB Hub  EtherFast Cable/DSL Router w/ 1- 10/100 Port
This one to connect up to 4 PC's  EtherFast Cable/DSL Router w/ 4 10/100 Switched Ports
This one to connect up to 8 PC's  EtherFast Cable/DSL Router w/ 8 10/100 Switched Ports

STEP 3. Buy or build a crossover cable.  You can buy one at comready.com for $2.50 or you can build one.

STEP 4. Go to http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp and download  the latest firmware patch for your model of Linksys router.  DON'T install the firmware UNLESS you experiencing difficulty with the stock router.

Go to our Software Download Page http://geocities.com/starbanduser/soft.html and download the IPA Internet Page Accelerator.  You can also download the LIVE 180! utility.  Don't install these yet, just have them available.

Connect that computer (the computer you used to download the firmware patch) and only that computer to the router.

Connect the computer to any port EXCEPT THE WAN PORT.

Connect the computer to the router using a standard CAT5 cable.

Make sure you have a link light. (SEE LINKSYS DOCUMENTATION)

Set your network cards TCP/IP Protocol to an I.P. address of 192.168.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0  THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY.  IT IS NECESSARY TO DO THIS UNTIL YOUR ROUTER'S FIRMWARE HAS BEEN UPGRADED AND YOU HAVE PROGRAMMED YOUR ROUTER.
