Networking 101
by Ken Knight
The idea here
is to provide you with enough information to allow you to either
make a decision on the type of network you want and have someone else
install it for you OR install it yourself.
I don't want
to provide you with so much information that you feel overwhelmed,
but there is a certain amount that you have to know in order to make
good decisions regarding networking.
Let's
start off with some basics. First there are a couple of
different types of networks. One is called "Client /
Server" and another one is called "Peer to Peer".
A "Client / Server" situation is much like what is going on
between this site and you. Your browser is acting as a
"client" to this site, which is in turn the
"Server".
However,
what most of you will be using in your homes and small businesses
with Starband involved is the latter of the two types mentioned,
called a "Peer to Peer".
A "Peer
to Peer" is where each machine can act as a server to another
machine on the network for some resource or a client which gets
information from another machine on the network. Hence, all
machines can be considered "equal" or "peers".
